Diet tips for overweight mums-to-be
Updated 25 Oct 2026
A mum-to-be is considered overweight if her BMI is over 25. BMI = weight (kg) / [height x height] (m).
However, you should not follow a strict diet during pregnancy. You still need enough nutrients for your baby to grow. A reasonable weight gain for you is 7-11.3kg compared with before pregnancy.
- Limit very starchy foods and focus on meal quality rather than quantity. You can replace rice with other lower-starch grains such as oats, quinoa, corn…
- Eat more green vegetables, especially dark leafy greens.
- Choose less sweet fruit.
- Limit fast food, cakes, soft drinks and fatty foods such as sausages, canned meat and fried food.
- Eat moderate amounts of protein-rich foods such as lean meat, lean fish, beans and pulses…
- Split your meals into smaller portions.
We wish you healthy, nourishing meals.
