What parents should know about sex during pregnancy
Updated 25 Oct 2026
During pregnancy, if your health is completely stable and your doctor has not given any special advice, you do not need to abstain from sex. The baby is protected by the uterus and amniotic fluid. Sex during pregnancy does not affect the baby. Some studies even show that sex is good for pregnancy. However, dads should never pressure mums and should respect her wishes and feelings.
On the other hand, if mum is not feeling well, sex should not be forced. What dad needs to do now is take good care of mum and help ease her pregnancy discomforts. When mum feels better and more comfortable, enjoy your intimacy as a couple. In addition, mums with cervical insufficiency or a history of repeated miscarriages or stillbirths should abstain from sex during pregnancy. If you have a threatened miscarriage, are leaking fluid or have vaginal bleeding, you must not have sex, to avoid danger to both you and your baby!
During pregnancy, hormones such as oestrogen increase, which raises a mum-to-be's sex drive. In addition, the genitals, and especially the breasts, are more fully developed than before. Many mums feel full of life and passion. Feeling beautiful and more cherished heightens their sensations during sex. However, as mentioned above, parents should keep track of mum's and baby's health during pregnancy and adjust accordingly!
