How to night-wean your baby: easier for mum, healthy for baby

Updated 25 Oct 2026

One of the reasons parents night-wean their baby is the hope that baby will sleep through the night and parents will have an easier time too. Sleeping through the night is also one of baby's developmental milestones. Every baby is different and may start sleeping through the night at different ages. So to night-wean your baby, you need to observe more closely to understand your little one.

  • To night-wean your baby, you can try some of the following:

- Feed your baby plenty during the day so that the milk baby gets meets their nutritional needs.

- Make sure your baby sleeps comfortably: a comfortable bedroom, a cool room temperature, baby is not unwell or ill…

- Help your baby focus so they drink as much milk as possible at the feed before sleep. Reduce distractions during feeding such as talking, light and screens so baby feeds more, especially the hindmilk. That way baby will stay full for longer.

- Try to space out feeds gradually instead of making baby stop night feeds completely and suddenly. You can ask family members to help care for baby when they cry for a night feed.

- Soothe your baby in other ways besides breastfeeding, such as giving baby water, stroking their back, massage, or talking with baby about night weaning if they are old enough.

- Night weaning may make your baby feel that you don't love them enough. Spend more time with baby during the day, cuddling and comforting them.

Besides parents' patience, night weaning needs baby's cooperation. If your baby only sleeps through the night and stops night feeds at 1-2 years old, there is no need to worry. Your baby can still develop normally.
