Can you have the flu vaccine during pregnancy?

Updated 25 Oct 2026

Dear parents, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mums-to-be can have the flu vaccine during pregnancy.

Getting the flu vaccine during pregnancy can help:

- Prevent flu and its complications for you.

- Prevent the risks that flu can pose to the baby: Having flu in the first 3 months of pregnancy can increase the risk of the baby having certain birth defects.

- Boost your baby's immunity after birth: If you have the flu vaccine during pregnancy, flu antibodies pass through the placenta and breast milk, helping to strengthen baby's immunity. Meanwhile, the flu vaccine can only be given to children over 6 months old.

Note: before getting the flu vaccine, ask your obstetrician and tell the vaccination centre that you are pregnant. The flu vaccine for mums-to-be is the injectable vaccine. The nasal spray flu vaccine is contraindicated for pregnant women.
