Conjunctivitis (pink eye) in young children and how to prevent it
Updated 25 Oct 2026
⚠️Conjunctivitis is on the rise: what can you do to prevent it?
👁️Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is an eye infection, usually caused by bacteria or viruses or by an allergic reaction, with the typical symptom of red eyes. It usually starts suddenly, first in one eye and then spreading to the other. Conjunctivitis is very easy to catch, spreads easily in the community and causes outbreaks. So far there is no vaccine to prevent it and no specific treatment, and people who have had conjunctivitis can be reinfected just a few months after recovering.
👁️Although conjunctivitis is an acute illness with intense symptoms that spreads easily, it is usually benign and rarely leaves lasting effects. However, it often greatly disrupts daily life, study and work, and in quite a few cases it drags on and causes complications that affect eyesight later
✔️To actively prevent conjunctivitis, we need to
1. Wash hands regularly with soap and clean water
2. Avoid rubbing the eyes, nose and mouth with your hands
3. Do not share personal items such as eye drop bottles, face towels, glasses, face masks…
4. Clean the eyes, nose and throat every day with saline solution and ordinary eye drops and nose drops
5. Use soap or ordinary disinfectants to disinfect the sick person's belongings and items
6. Limit contact with people who have or are suspected of having conjunctivitis
7. People who have or are suspected of having conjunctivitis should limit contact with others
8. People with signs of conjunctivitis should go to a health facility for timely examination, advice and treatment, and not treat themselves without guidance from health workers, to avoid serious complications.
