How to care for and clean your newborn's umbilical cord

Updated 25 Oct 2026

  • Leave the cord stump free and cover it with your baby's clothing;
  • Fold the nappy below the cord stump; do not put anything over the stump;
  • Use clean cotton wool to wipe the stump if it gets dirty;
  • If the stump is red or oozing pus, tell a health worker immediately or take your baby to see a doctor
  • You can clean your baby's cord stump with saline solution. The cord stump will fall off after 1 to 2 weeks. When it falls off, a small amount of blood may come out; this is normal. Keep caring for the area as you did before it fell off.
  • However, if the navel keeps bleeding, take your baby to the doctor promptly!
