How to tell true labour from false labour
Updated 25 Oct 2026
"False labour also has irregular, uneven uterine contractions that do not clearly increase in frequency or intensity. These contractions do not cause you pain. Your cervix hardly progresses after a period of monitoring. If you walk around or lie down to rest, the pain may stop or move to a different spot.
To relieve and reduce the discomfort of false labour, rest more; you can take a warm shower or lie down and relax. Make sure you drink 2-3 litres of water a day.
On the other hand, if you feel pain each time your belly tightens, and it progresses as labour goes on: regular, getting stronger, longer and closer together, possibly with pinkish vaginal discharge or amniotic fluid, these are signs that labour has begun and you should go to a medical facility immediately.
