Updated 25 Oct 2026
Gaining too much weight during pregnancy exposes mums-to-be to many risks such as gestational diabetes, premature birth, high blood pressure, caesarean section, pre-eclampsia and even stillbirth… So how can you control your weight during pregnancy? Here is some useful advice for pregnant mums.
Controlling weight gain during pregnancy is very important for the health of both mum and baby. According to the recommendations of the National Institute of Nutrition, pregnant women who are overweight or obese should gain about 15% of their pre-pregnancy weight. Of this, they should gain 200-300g/week in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.
Monitoring weight during pregnancy: Weight should be monitored throughout pregnancy, starting from the beginning of pregnancy. Tips for weighing yourself:
- Weigh yourself once a week (choose a fixed day of the week)
- Weigh yourself at a fixed time of day (for example in the morning after going to the toilet)
- Wear thin, light clothing when weighing
- Record the date and your weight to keep track.
Controlling weight during pregnancy is very important and deserves special attention, because being either overweight or underweight at this stage can affect the health of both mum and baby!
