How to thaw breast milk properly

Updated 25 Oct 2026

Here Momby shows parents how to thaw breast milk correctly and effectively:

- Slow thawing: Move the milk from the freezer to the fridge. It can take 8-12 hours for breast milk to thaw completely. This is the ideal way to thaw: the milk changes temperature gradually, which helps preserve the nutrients in breast milk as fully as possible. After taking the milk out, place it in a bowl of warm water at 37 - 40°C for a few minutes and it is ready for your baby.

- Quick thawing: You can place the milk bottle/bag in a bowl of warm water no hotter than 40°C. Or hold the bottle/bag under warm running water below 40°C until the milk is slightly warm, and it is ready for your baby

Parents, remember not to thaw milk in the microwave. And use older milk before newer milk so that milk is not stored too long, which affects the quality of breast milk.

Thawed breast milk should not be refrozen. In addition, thawed breast milk should only be kept in the fridge for no more than 24 hours, or at room temperature for 1-2 hours.
