How to relieve breast engorgement when weaning your baby

Updated 25 Oct 2026

When weaning your baby, keep an eye on your breasts. If your breasts are engorged, you will notice the following signs:

- The breasts are swollen and feel hot. You feel pain and no milk flows out. The nipples are flattened because the skin is stretched.

- Sometimes the breasts are engorged, the skin is red and you have a fever, but the fever usually lasts only 24 hours.

You can express some milk to relieve the engorgement, but do not empty the breast completely. When the breast is empty, the body thinks you are short of milk and makes more. Conversely, if some milk is left in the breast, the body will make less.

You can put a warm towel on your breast and massage gently before expressing. See a doctor immediately if your breasts show the following signs:

- Severe breast pain

- Feeling tired, high fever

- Spreading redness

- Cracked nipples

- No improvement after 24 hours
