Common signs of labour
Updated 25 Oct 2026
"Labour begins when you start having uterine contractions that are spaced apart and grow gradually from mild to strong. The signs of labour are as follows:
- Feeling pain each time your belly tightens. It progresses as labour goes on: regular, getting stronger, longer and closer together.
- Pinkish mucus discharge from the vagina (the "show").
- Watery fluid leaking from the vagina (amniotic fluid).
- The cervix changes and gradually opens as labour progresses.
Labour for a first baby lasts longer: about 16 - 24 hours; for subsequent babies: about 8 - 16 hours.
Some mums experience false labour in the last weeks of pregnancy. False labour also has irregular, uneven uterine contractions that do not clearly increase in frequency or intensity. These contractions do not cause you pain. Your cervix hardly progresses after a period of monitoring.
When you notice signs that labour has begun, stay calm, go to the hospital and follow the instructions of the health staff and doctors.
