What to know about drinking coconut water in the first trimester

Updated 25 Oct 2026

Coconut water is rich in protein, sodium, phosphorus, vitamins C, B1 and B6, fibre, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc… That makes it a good drink for pregnant women. Coconut water also helps you take in a good amount of fluid, easing morning sickness and tiredness.

There is no contraindication to drinking coconut water during pregnancy, and there is no specific research on when in pregnancy it is best to drink it.

Some people say you shouldn't drink coconut water in the first 3 months because it increases the risk of miscarriage, but there is no clear evidence for this. You can weigh up whether to drink coconut water at this stage.

Although coconut water provides many nutrients, don't overdo it, because the exact amounts of specific substances in coconut water cannot be measured.

Also, it is a diuretic drink, so try to limit it at night.
