Colostrum and its wonderful benefits for your baby

Updated 25 Oct 2026

If for some reason your baby can't breastfeed directly yet, express your milk by hand. You can have a syringe ready to collect each drop of colostrum you express. The amount is very small and thick, but it does a great deal for your baby, so don't waste a single drop. These are the precious components of your colostrum

- Colostrum is highly concentrated in immune factors: including immunoglobulins (IgA-IgM-IgG), lysozyme and other enzymes, lactoferrin, as well as cells including lymphocytes, neutrophils and epithelial cells… that help your baby build a stronger immune system. It has been shown that a mother's immunity can be passed to her newborn through a mechanism called the entero-mammary pathway. Through this mechanism, antibodies against pathogens the mother has been exposed to are transferred into breast milk, protecting the baby against infection.

- It contains carbohydrate oligosaccharides that support your baby's digestive system. These complex oligosaccharides are important for defence against infection, preventing pathogens from sticking to similar structures on the surface of the gut lining.

- It contains glycosphingolipids that help your baby's brain develop. Colostrum also contains a lot of gangliosides, a group of glycosphingolipids important for brain development. They not only provide building materials for early brain development but also act as target receptors that bacteria bind to, influencing the gut immune system.

- Colostrum is rich in minerals. Iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), essential trace nutrients that are important for newborns, are found in high concentrations in colostrum - Protein: colostrum contains 5 times more protein than ordinary breast milk - Vitamins: the vitamins in colostrum are usually vitamins A, E, B2, B3, K.. You could say colostrum is not only a source of nutrients but also an incredibly precious natural vaccine for your baby.
