The best time to test for gestational diabetes

The gestational diabetes test screens for and diagnoses whether a pregnant woman has gestational diabetes.

You will be screened for gestational diabetes with a 2-hour 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test.

Blood samples are taken 3 times, at 3 time points:

- 1st sample: fasting blood sample (no food for at least 8 hours).

- 2nd sample: 1 hour after drinking 75 grams of glucose.

- 3rd sample: 2 hours after drinking 75 grams of glucose.

Results are normal when:

- Fasting blood glucose: 92 mg/dL.

- After 1 hour: 180 mg/dL.

- After 2 hours: 153 mg/dL.

If one result is abnormal, you will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes screening is done early, at your first antenatal visit, if you have risk factors. If you have no risk factors or were not diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the first 3 months, you will have the 2-hour 75-gram glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy.
