5 foods to avoid while breastfeeding
Updated 25 Oct 2026
1. Never drink alcohol or beer: avoid alcohol and beer while breastfeeding, as they interfere with milk production by altering essential hormones such as oxytocin. They can also disrupt your baby's sleep, make your baby irritable and cause long-term health problems.
2. Avoid caffeinated drinks while breastfeeding. Caffeine makes babies alert and restless and unable to sleep, leading to irritability and affecting their development.
3. Don't eat fish high in mercury, as mercury affects the development of your baby's brain and nervous system.
4. Limit processed foods such as crisps and chips, doughnuts and canned foods, … which carry many health risks such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. These foods can also change the quality of your breast milk, affecting the health of your breastfed baby.
5. Foods likely to cause allergies in your baby: cow's milk, fish, peanuts, eggs, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat and soya are common allergenic foods. If your baby is allergic to any of these foods, you should cut them out of your diet while breastfeeding.
