Why you shouldn't take iron and calcium at the same time in pregnancy
Updated 25 Oct 2026
Iron is a nutrient that is very hard to absorb, and calcium reduces its absorption. So mums-to-be should not take iron and calcium supplements together at the same time.
To avoid this possible interaction, doctors advise taking these two nutrients a few hours apart. Here are some tips for taking iron and calcium during pregnancy:
Calcium supplements: Make sure you get enough calcium, but no more than 2,500mg/day, to avoid overdose and high blood calcium.
When taking calcium, avoid combining it with foods and drinks such as chocolate, tea and coffee, as these interactions may reduce calcium absorption.
Iron supplements: Take iron tablets on an empty stomach with drinks rich in vitamin C such as orange juice, lemon juice...
Also, when taking iron supplements, drink plenty of water and eat fibre-rich foods to prevent constipation. Take the tablets only with cooled boiled water; avoid tea or coffee, as they reduce iron absorption.
When taking iron and calcium, ask your doctor's advice so you take the right, adequate doses of both.
