Why should you drink milk during pregnancy?
Updated 25 Oct 2026
Fresh milk provides mums-to-be with a good amount of calcium along with other micronutrients.
You can drink sweetened, unsweetened or low-sugar fresh milk according to your taste. However, mums-to-be with high blood pressure, gestational diabetes or a risk of gestational diabetes, and those who are overweight, should drink unsweetened fresh milk.
Choose fresh milk from a clear source that has been treated before drinking; both pasteurised and UHT (sterilised) milk are fine. How much milk you drink depends on your diet. You can have 200ml - 600ml a day. You can also replace milk with dairy products such as yoghurt or cheese.
In particular, in the last 3 months of pregnancy you should have about 6 units of milk a day. Using the formula:
1 unit of milk = 100ml fresh milk = 100g yoghurt = 15g cheese.
However, do not overdo milk either. You need a suitable diet. Milk alone is not enough to provide the nutrition you and your baby need.
