Your baby's development

Your baby is about 48.6 cm long and weighs about 2.8 - 2.9 kg. Your baby is now full term, a healthy weight and mature enough to live outside your tummy.

And the information about your baby's development below will make you smile, because it's truly adorable:

  • Your baby is still practising breathing amniotic fluid to prepare for the “big journey” of birth.
  • Those clever hands can now grasp things nearby well: toes, nose, umbilical cord.
  • Your baby practises sucking their thumb to prepare for the first feed after birth.
  • Your baby's face shows more fun expressions.

Your body

To prepare for your baby's arrival, you will still have to put up with the things below – keep going, mum:

  • Itchy tummy skin, and stretch marks continue to develop.
  • More vaginal discharge.
  • Your breasts may leak colostrum.
  • You may feel Braxton-Hicks contractions.
  • Baby's movements: curling up, kicking, punching.
  • Cramps, trouble sleeping and loose stools may happen.
  • You may go into labour: tummy pain coming in waves, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, or your waters breaking.

Advice for you

Momby still advises you to keep track of your baby's movements and recognise the signs of labour. Try to keep your emotions as relaxed and comfortable as possible – a good mood will make giving birth much easier.

Also remember to attend all your antenatal check-ups to check your baby's heartbeat and whether your baby has turned head-down. 95% of babies turn head-down towards the vagina, as this is the best position for birth.

You also need to have your hospital bag ready, as you could give birth at any time.
