Week 4 of pregnancy

Your baby this week

Your baby's development

In week 4, the embryo begins to form two groups of cells: an inner group and an outer group. The outer group of cells surrounds the embryo and develops into the umbilical cord and placenta, which will nourish your baby later on. The inner group of cells keeps dividing and changing to form your baby's future organs, such as the nervous system, digestive system, urinary system, cardiovascular system...

At this stage the image on an ultrasound is still very hard to see. In some cases the yolk sac can be seen; it nourishes the embryo before the placenta is fully formed.

Your body

At 4 weeks pregnant you may notice early that your period is late. Some mums begin to feel a little tired, have tender breasts or notice a small amount of pink discharge. However, the signs of pregnancy are still quite faint. If you take a pregnancy test at this stage, two lines will appear if the hormone level is high enough.
